European glass package recycling nudges up

Data show 2001 EU target to be easily passed but some states adrift from planned 2006 target

The amount of glass packaging recycled in 17 European countries rose by 3% in 2000 to 8.7m tonnes, according to figures from European glass container federation Feve. The rise was slightly smaller than that achieved in 1999 (EED 07/08/00).

Including the EU-15 minus Luxembourg, plus Norway, Switzerland and Turkey, the statistics confirm that all EU countries will comfortably meet the 1994 packaging directive target of at least 15% recycling of each packaging material by 2001.
