Nation-wide caps on nitrogen inputs in the works as Ireland focuses on nitrates directive

Irish farms should be subject to compulsory "good farming" rules to reduce pollution, environment minister Noel Dempsey announced last week. Mr Dempsey emphasised agriculture's position as Ireland's "dominant" polluter and said that transforming existing good practice guidelines into mandatory standards would "go most of the way" to meeting several EU laws, particularly the framework waste and nitrates directives.
