EU governments rebuked over sustainability

Barcelona summit marked a "stop" for policy integration, complains Jiménez-Beltrán

The chief of the European envronment agency (EEA) has launched a scathing attack on EU heads of government for "ignoring" environmental issues at their recent Barcelona summit. "Only a miracle" at June's Seville summit can now put the process back on track, said Domingo Jiménez-Beltrán.

Sustainability and the Cardiff environmental integration process got short shrift in Barcelona despite a furious campaign by a variety of lobby groups to force them up the agenda (EED 18/03/02). Mr Jiménez-Beltrán warned against this outcome before the summit (EED 31/01/02) but has now taken a strikingly more aggressive tone.
