Rail liberalisation "key to EU modal shift aim"

Unice says moving freight off roads impossible without freer railway markets

An EU goal to shift more freight transport from road to rail will not be achieved without liberalising railway markets, business lobby Unice said today ahead of a meeting of transport ministers in Brussels tomorrow. The association said it feared EU governments would not fully back European Commission plans for liberalisation.

"Modal shift will not occur unless the price/quality ratio of railway services improves significantly - liberalisation of railway freight transport is crucial to this," Unice said today. "We don't see the political message that we need to [move freight onto rail] matched with concrete actions," Ewout Sandker told ENDS Europe DAILY.
