Mobile phone mast safety guarantee sought

German NGO demands proven absence of risks to public health before new transmitters installed

German environmental group Bund has called on the government to approve installation of a new generation of mobile phone transmitters only if network operators can prove definitively that there are no risks to public health. The NGO has written to economics and environment ministers Werner Müller and Jürgen Trittin setting out its concerns.

Mobile phone operators such as Vodafone, Deutsche Telekom and MobilCom are planning to install up to 30,000 new masts around Germany to accommodate an upgrade of the network to UMTS, or third-generation mobile phone services.
