"Big savings" from Austrian pack waste law

Agency recommends further rise in separate paper collection, cutting back on plastics

Separate collection of packaging waste not only has environmental benefits but also saves the Austrian economy euros 269m per year, according to a study published today by the country's environment agency (UBA). It concludes that even greater environmental and economic benefits could be achieved if more waste paper were collected separately, but that separation of plastics should be scaled back.

The UBA report puts about two-thirds of the savings down to environmental benefits, calculated in cost terms where possible, such as avoided carbon dioxide emissions.
