Commission sent back to drawing board on EEE

Stakeholder meeting confirms widespread industry hostility, lack of consensus

The official report of a stakeholder meeting on plans for EU legislation to green electrical and economic equipment (EEE) design confirms general opposition and a lack of consensus on the way forward. The workshop was held in February, shortly after the Commission's enterprise directorate revealed an overwhelmingly hostile response to its proposals following an initial consultation (EED 22/01/02).

The workshop report details widespread resistance to the introduction of mandatory life-cycle analysis for products. Representatives of small and medium-sized enterprises, in particular, insist such a requirement would make an EEE directive "impossible to implement".
