European Commissioner promises EU nuclear safety rules as enlargement approaches

EU energy and transport commissioner Loyola de Palacio has pledged to end a nearly half-century tradition of national prerogative over nuclear energy safety by proposing common European rules. The European Parliament made similar demands two years ago. Until now it had appeared unlikely the European Commission would respond (EED 19/05/00).

With EU enlargement approaching, Ms de Palacio told MEPs on Tuesday, "the time has come" for "common standards and control mechanisms which will guarantee the application of the same criteria and methods in the whole of enlarged Europe".
