UK plans risk-based pollution controls

Flexible regulation "brings more efficiency without loss of environmental protection"

English and Welsh local authorities are being urged to focus efforts to control industrial air pollution on the highest risk sites, under proposals made today by the UK environment ministry. The new approach will mean more efficient regulation without loss of environmental protection standards, claimed the ministry.

Some 18,000 industrial sites in England and Wales are regulated by local authorities. The government has been looking for some time at ways to reduce the regulatory burden based on a consultancy recommendation for a risk-based approach.
