Greenpeace hits at PVC industry pledges

Appraisal of voluntary commitment claims firms refusing to go beyond business-as-usual

The tit-for-tat battle between Europe's PVC industry and environmentalists over the polymer's future continued today as Greenpeace released a damning assessment of the PVC manufacturing chain's commitment to alleviate environmental impacts through voluntary measures, Vinyl 2010.

The campaigning organisation slams the commitment as an "attempt to divert attention away" from the problems associated with PVC, as set out in a European Commission green paper nearly two years ago. The manufacturing chain released its second annual review of the commitment last week (EED 26/04/02).
