Global environment prospects under review

Unep releases major retrospective-cum-prospective report as input to Johannesburg

The UN environment programme (Unep) today released a major retrospective of world environmental trends over 30 years plus a look ahead to the next 30. The launch of Global environment outlook 3 has been timed to coincide with the Johannesburg sustainability summit starting in three months' time.

Unep director Klaus Töpfer claimed Geo3 as "the most authoritative assessment of where we have been, where we have reached and where we are likely to go". It also "breaks new ground", says Unep, by setting out four environmental scenarios over the next three decades.
