Germans back strong environmental policies

General support for government's green record marred by low approval for energy tax package

Although crime, the economy and immigration have taken centre stage in Germany's current election campaign, the environment ministry has unveiled an opinion poll indicating that environmentalism remains as important as ever to the German people.

Commissioned by the environment ministry and the environment agency, the survey found 93% of the population considered environmental protection an important political issue. Just over half said it was the government's duty to protect the environment, up from 38% four years ago. Some 65% felt the government should do more to protect the environment, while only 3% thought it should do less.
