MEPs vote for more action on packaging

Environment committee calls for 10% packaging reduction, higher minimum recycling targets

EU member states should be required to achieve a 10% cut in the volume of packaging waste produced annually by 2006 from a baseline of 1998, the European Parliament's environment committee said this afternoon.

The committee was voting on a European Commission proposal to increase EU packaging recovery and recycling targets originally fixed in a 1994 directive. Environment ministers reached a provisional agreement on the directive's revision last month (EED 26/06/02). Once the full parliament has voted on the dossier, it will move to a second reading.
