Barrage of EU green infringements continues

Belgium targeted for authorisations; Sweden, Finland over industrial pollution; all states on ozone depleters

Belgium has been sent a reasoned opinion, the last warning before the Commission seeks a court judgement, over its system of "tacit authorisations" for certain activities impacting on the environment. Brussels wants to know whether Belgium has ended the practice, which allows some environmental permits to be granted by default if authorities fail to reply to applications by a certain deadline. The European court of justice has already ruled this system illegal (EED 14/06/01).
