Harmonised EU professional diesel duty proposed

Commission says single commercial fuel excise rate will remove distortions, improve environment

The European Commission yesterday proposed to harmonise excise duty rates for commercial diesel fuel used in EU road haulage and passenger transport.

Though mainly aimed at smoothing out internal market distortions, the Commission claims the move would help create an EU energy tax framework and yield environmental benefits. It would also go towards countering a recurrence of the fuel protests that gripped some EU countries in recent years.
