Sustainability profile 18: Refrigeration

Sector claims curbs on ozone depleting, global warming, substances driving it towards sustainability

The refrigeration industry has a daunting array of environmental sustainability issues to address but is rising to the challenge, according to its sustainability report commissioned by Unep. Report author, the International institute of refrigeration (IIR), concludes that the sector's main environmental focus must be refrigerant gas emissions and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions associated with electricity consumption by refrigeration plant.

The chemicals in the spotlight are chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) and hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) used as refrigerants and insulating gases.
