MEPs prepare to unwrap EU packaging debate

Business hopes for softening of radical "green" proposals from environment committee

The European parliament will reconvene in Strasbourg on Monday for its first full session following the summer break. The opening item on the assembly's agenda is a debate and vote to decide its first-reading position on a revision of the EU's packaging directive. MEPs are also expected to pass a critical resolution on environment legislation reporting requirements on EU member states.

The packaging vote will reveal the likely starting positions of a conciliation battle with the council of ministers: the parliament's environment committee has recommended a series of sweeping and demanding amendments to the law, while ministers have already said they want to change only the recycling and recovery targets for now (EED 09/07/02).
