EU steel pack recycling continues to climb

European statistics show backward countries making big push to catch up with leaders

Recycling of steel packaging rose sharply in EU countries last year, according to industry association Apeal. Looking at data from all the bloc's member states except Greece, the association estimates that the tonnage recycled increased from 1.67m tonnes in 2000 to 1.89m tonnes in 2001, and the recycling rate from 50% to 55%.

Recycling rates remained high and stable in the traditional recycling leader countries such as Germany, the Netherlands and Austria. Big improvements were reported by traditional laggards, with Portugal up from 16% to 28%, Italy from 26% to 44% and Spain from 33% to 46%.
