The Swedish environmental protection agency's 2001 update on recycling of products covered by national producer responsibility legislation has shown further advances in most areas. But it shows reverses for aluminium and plastic packaging "despite increased efforts", echoing concerns over packaging expressed last year (EED 03/07/01).
The year's star turn was waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE). Following the introduction of recycling rules in July 2001, about 10 kilograms per capita per year are already being collected, described by the EPA as an "unofficial world record". Norway claimed the same title this summer, though it reported collection rates under half this amount (EED 12/06/02).
