EU parliament takes up reins on fish farming

Environmental impacts centre of debate during aquaculture hearing in fisheries committee

Environmental aspects of fish farming emerged as the central topic of a European parliamentary hearing on aquaculture held in Brussels this week. The hearing follows publication of an EU sustainable fish farming strategy last month (EED 19/09/02).

Participants at the debate on Tuesday agreed that aquaculture plays an important role in stemming job losses in the traditional fishing sector as tighter EU quotas begin to bite especially in northern Britain and north-western Spain. But opinion was divided on its environmental impacts.
