Costs of biowaste management assessed

Consultancy study recommends EU requirement for source separation of compostable wastes

Source separation of compostable household wastes should be made mandatory across the EU, a consultancy study for the European Commission has recommended. The study was ordered to inform drafting of a biowaste directive that the Commission has pledged to propose before the end of 2004.

The study analyses economic costs and benefits of different options for managing biodegradable municipal waste. The issues it raises are important for the biowaste directive and in the context of looming deadlines under the 1999 landfill directive for EU states to cut biodegradable waste dumping.
