Good marks for Italian waste oils handling

Management body issues upbeat environmental report, pledges to achieve 100% collection

Italy's mandatory body for the management of waste oils, COOU, sent to regeneration nearly 90% of the 192,000 tonnes it collected in 2001, according to the organisation's first ever environmental report, issued last week. The figure almost certainly sets a European record - the EU average, notes COOU, is just 29%.

EU member states are required to give priority to regeneration of waste oils into new oil products over other recovery methods, but many have failed to do so. The European Commission has already won a court judgement against Germany over the issue and is currently taking cases against other countries (EED 25/07/02).
