UN chemical trade watch list expanded

Signatories to Rotterdam "prior informed consent" convention hold ninth meeting

Signatories to the UN Rotterdam convention on international chemicals trade last week agreed to add one new substance to the list of substances subject to prior informed consent (PIC) of importing countries during a low-key annual session. Further expansion is expected to be approved at next year's meeting.

The new substance is monocrotophos, which becomes the 27th pesticide in a PIC list now 32 substances strong. The decision was approved at the ninth meeting of the convention's intergovernmental negotiating committee, which ended in Bonn, Germany, on Friday.
