German firm throws down gauntlet over nuclear

Reversal of government policy to restrict nuclear predicted by major energy supplier

The head of German utility RWE Power has challenged the government over policies to phase out nuclear power in the energy supply chain, in a debate during a conference organised by European industry body Foratom.

Dr Gert Maichel, who also chairs Germany's nuclear power forum, claimed the "anti-nuclear" climate would soften once the importance of nuclear in the energy mix became clear (EED 17/12/01). "I have no doubt that... a change will come as soon as there are [electricity] blackouts," he said at the conference in Lille, France, which drew to a close today.
