Spanish renewables could lose price support

Energy minister suggests phasing out financial support for renewable energy producers

Spain's price support mechanism for renewable energy producers should be "phased out", energy minister José Folgado affirmed on Tuesday, adding that certain renewable technologies "are already capable of competing in the open market".

Addressing a seminar on energy markets in Spain and the UK, Mr Folgado said the energy market had "matured sufficiently" to provide incentives to ensure the future growth of "reliable and available energy sources such as wind power and biomass". He called for the eventual elimination of the Spanish 20-year-old "special regime" price support system for renewables and expressed interest in the introduction of a system of green certificates similar to that operating in the UK (EED 14/07/99).
