Big rise in UK waste taxes expected

Government reported preparing to double waste landfilling charges to boost recycling

The UK government is set to more than double taxes on waste landfilling, according to media reports. Finance minister Gordon Brown is expected to announce the increases next month when he outlines plans for the country's 2003/4 budget.

Environmentalist critics of the landfill tax - currently at UK£13 (€20) per tonne - have long argued that it is too low to effectively divert waste to recovery and recycling. The head of the Anglo-Welsh environment agency backed this view in a speech yesterday, calling for the tax rate to double. Earlier this year, a report commissioned by the environment ministry also recommended a big increase (EED 12/08/02).
