Activists stage climate and transport protests

Esso petrol stations in Luxembourg invaded; main Austrian trans-alpine roads blocked

European environmental activists advanced campaigns against oil company Esso and heavy lorries transiting the Alps region in separate actions staged today in Luxembourg and Austria.

Over 600 Greenpeace volunteers descended on all of Esso's 28 petrol stations in Luxembourg, hanging banners reading "Esso No. 1 climate criminal" and attempting to prevent drivers from filling up. The protest was timed to coincide with the latest meeting of parties to the UN climate change convention now underway in New Delhi (EED 23/10/02).
