WWF stokes the fire over CHP directive

Group demands more action to boost cogeneration as talks on draft EU directive begin

Environmental group WWF has reiterated calls for the EU to set targets for boosting combined heat and power (CHP) as the bloc's institutions prepare to debate a draft directive on cogeneration unveiled by the European Commission in July (EED 25/07/02).

The group has set out its arguments in a position paper sent to MEPs and the EU's Danish presidency, which is brokering talks on the directive in the council of ministers. Key demands are for inclusion of EU-wide and national targets to boost CHP, earlier transposition and implementation deadlines, and stronger control and enforcement mechanisms.
