Still no consensus on EU pesticide strategy

Stakeholders face drawn-out battle to reconcile differences over future European action

Wide differences between EU institutions plus governments and stakeholders on the direction of future European controls on pesticides were confirmed yesterday in Brussels at a conference organised by the European Commission to discuss a draft thematic strategy issued in July (EED 04/07/02).

With an initial consultation period now nearly over EU environment commissioner Margot Wallström urged all stakeholders "to find compromises and areas of convergence rather than focus on divergent positions". She plans to send outline proposals to ministers in December. "We'll just give them what we've got and let them battle it out," a source told ENDS Europe DAILY yesterday.
