Advance for Britain's green fiscal framework

Government announces tax changes; issues strategies on economic instruments, waste

The UK government yesterday stressed its commitment to using fiscal measures to achieve environmental protection. Finance minister Gordon Brown announced several environmental tax changes and released a strategy on economic instruments and the environment.

Included in the preview of next spring's budget statement was a new long-term target for the tax on waste landfilling of UK£35 (€55) per tonne, nearly triple the current rate. Proposed annual increases should mean it is achieved by 2010. Some announcement on waste taxes had been expected (EED 24/10/02).
