New deposits victory for German government

Supreme administrative court reverses verdict preventing introduction in North Rhine Westphalia

Deposits on one-way drinks containers will take effect all over Germany from 1 January 2003 after the supreme administrative court for the state of North Rhine Westphalia today threw out a decision by a lower court that would have prevented their introduction in that state (EED 11/09/02).

In its ruling, Münster's supreme court overturned the decision made by a Düsseldorf court in September. It said that - as the deposits are a federal and not a state measure - all German states are legally obliged to comply with it.
