Wallström woos green accord sceptics

EU commissioner underlines parliament's continuing role in voluntary environmental agreements

EU environment commissioner Margot Wallström this week continued a softly-softly campaign to win over the European parliament to wider use of voluntary agreements for environmental protection. Speaking before MEPs, she stressed there was a continuing role for the assembly in their development, responding to fears that the parliament would be sidelined.

Ms Wallström's presentation to the parliament's environment committee follows publication of a European Commission communication on voluntary agreements in July setting out two options based respectively on self-regulation and co-regulation with EU legislators (EED 17/07/02).
