New alarm over EU renewable energy targets

WWF urges more support, strengthened emphasis on efficiency in response to blackouts

EU states are failing to take seriously their obligations to promote renewable energy, green group WWF alleged on Thursday. The NGO's latest intervention comes ahead of a key legal deadline for national implementation of the EU's 2001 renewable energy directive.

The prospects for renewables' share of electricity are not satisfactory, and could worsen further, WWF's Stephan Singer admitted, as a result of the power blackouts and brownouts that have affected European countries this summer and autumn.
