"Further debate needed" on dematerialisation

Expert calls for renewed EU consideration of need for absolute resource productivity improvements

A leading expert in material flow accounting has called for further discussion on whether the EU should aim for absolute resource productivity improvements in the wake of a European Commission communication earlier this month which stressed instead the need to address resource-related environmental impacts.

Stefan Bringezu of Germany's Wuppertal institute - one of the Commission's advisors on EU resources policy - suggested that absolute dematerialisation of the economy will be vital if sustainable production and consumption patterns are to be achieved.
