Business group attacks EU support for wind

Energy-intensive industries warn of damage to competitiveness, slam lack of level playing field

European energy-intensive industrial sector has criticised high levels of financial support for wind power, claiming significant and rising damage to its competitiveness. The International federation of industrial energy consumers (Ifiec) also attacked the lack of a level playing field around Europe, due to differing national schemes for promoting renewables.

Ifiec-Europe listed its concerns in a report surveying renewable support schemes in nine EU countries. In six of these no special measures have been taken to exempt energy-intensive from resultant electricity price surcharges.
