Hard fight ahead on EU f-gas regulation

Industry and environmentalists draw the battle lines as European institutions begin their scrutiny

Deep divisions over how Europe should limit industrial climate gas emissions have been underlined by the first detailed industry and environmentalist position papers since the European Commission issued legislative proposals in August.

The Commission's basic strategy is to improve containment of HFCs, PFCs and SF6 (collectively known as f-gases). However, it proposes to phase out HFC-134a as a coolant in vehicle air conditioning systems by 2013 and prohibit some more minor f-gas uses sooner (EED 14/08/03).
