Italy creates body to boost renewable power

Industry ministry flags up role for renewables as government moves to increase generation capacity

A boost to renewable energy sources could take place in Italy as a result of a massive electricity blackout that left most Italians in the dark for several hours last month (EED 29/09/03). A junior industry minister responsible for energy policy announced this week the creation of a new body to promote renewable energy sources, Il Sole 24Ore newspaper reports.

"Generation of 'clean' electricity is too low and we want to reach a higher percentage," Giovanni dell'Elce said. His comments came as the government focuses on increasing generation capacity to reduce the country's reliance on foreign electricity imports.
