European Commission recommends legal changes, more secure funding for standards bodies

The European Commission's enterprise directorate has underlined its commitment to enhancing the role of standardisation in EU policy making in a working document. Standardisation has "high potential" to contribute to both sustainable development and competitiveness, it insists. Its role should be supported and further enhanced.

Traditionally used for a wide range of products, standards have taken on greater importance in environmental debate in recent years. Despite the controversy over its application to EU packaging rules, DG Enterprise has few doubts about standardisation's track record.
