Success for Danish drinks pack return system

Up to 90% recovery rate achieved in first year after long-standing ban on disposables lifted

In its first year of operation, Denmark's new deposit-and-return system for drinks packaging has achieved recovery rates of 81% for beer and soft drinks cans and 90% for glass bottles, according to preliminary estimates.

"The figures show once and for all that that the return system has accomplished its most important task: protecting the environment", environment minister Hans Christian Schmidt said in a statement. However, recovery of disposable packaging as a whole, at 82%, was still falling short of the target of 90 % by the end of this year.
