Taking the temperature on EU's green agenda

Commission issues "first ever" systematic overview and analysis of EU environmental policies

The European Commission will prioritise flexibility and dialogue in future EU environmental policy making, it said on Tuesday, in a communication described as the first ever systematic overview and analysis of European environmental policies. The EU executive is pledging annual environment policy reviews from now on.

The review marks a coming of age for environmental policies, according to a senior Commission official. A first result should be a more structured and visible enivironmental component in the next spring progress report to EU leaders on the bloc's Lisbon strategy for sustainable development. Previous reports in this series were criticised for sidelining environmental issues (EED 31/01/02).
