Fiery indignation over EU packaging law deal

Incineration with energy recovery will still count towards waste recovery targets, EU bodies decide

The EU will continue to allow packaging incinerated with energy recovery to count towards new packaging waste recovery targets, delegations representing EU governments and the European parliament agreed on Thursday. The deal has infuriated environmentalists, who accused both sides of a stitch-up and of ditching a key tenet of EU waste policy.

The status of packaging waste incinerated with energy recovery was the key issue facing negotiators aiming to finalise a revision of the EU's 1994 packaging directive through conciliation talks (EED 08/10/03).
