German opposition urged to snub deposits

European drinks can manufacturers call on CDU/CSU-run states to ignore their enforcement duties

European beverage can makers have asked Germany's nine opposition-run state governments not to enforce the country's controversial disposable drinks packaging deposit scheme introduced at the beginning of the year. The move is also designed to stiffen the resolve of the European Commission, which launched a legal infringement proceeding against Germany in October, alleging that the system breaches EU free trade rules (EED 21/10/03).
