An accelerated global phase-out of single-hulled oil tankers, an obligation to carry heavy grade oil products in double-hulled vessels and stricter inspection arrangements for older tankers were approved this week by the International maritime organisation (IMO). Proposals to introduce these new, more stringent measures were first made in London this summer (EED 18/07/03). The new rules basically replicate controls already introduced by the EU following the Prestige tanker sinking in 2002. Their agreement drew a warm welcome from the European Commission.
