Greenpeace condemned over Esso blockade

Greenpeace Luxembourg may have to pay substantial damages to oil firm Esso following a tribunal's ruling delivered on Monday. Esso and 21 petrol station operators successfully sued the environmental group after 600 of the NGO's activists blockaded the company's filling stations (EED 08/01/03). The companies sought €225,000. An expert is due to set damages next June. Greenpeace called the ruling "harmful for climate protection". Its protest was part of a campaign against Esso's parent company ExxonMobil, which it accuses of undermining efforts to combat global warming. See Greenpeace Luxembourg, and StopEsso Luxembourg.
