Mixed reaction to EU waste recycling plan

First survey of responses to communication shows opposition to EU-wide targets, tradeable permits

European Commission proposals for a more market-driven and flexible EU approach to waste recycling are meeting significant opposition, according to first results of a consultation exercise launched in May. Commission official Marianne Klingbeil sketched an initial picture of responses in London on Tuesday.

The Commission's May communication on waste prevention and recycling has received broad support from stakeholders, Ms Klingbeil told a meeting organised by a UK parliament interest group on waste. However, she she also admitted there was resistance on several key proposals (EED 27/05/03).
