UK backs further massive aviation growth

Environmentalists left furious as government approves huge expansion in airport capacity

The UK government has proposed a massive expansion in aviation, including the building of two new runways by 2020 in England's congested south-east. The white paper has received a broad welcome from business and a hail of criticism from environmentalists.

Transport minister Alistair Darling said the government was committed to ensuring that the aviation industry met its environmental costs. However, the paper includes no concrete measures to constrain forecast growth in air traffic, such as higher passenger taxes.
