Revised EU packaging waste rules in force

Governments required to boost recovery and recycling by end of 2008, fix new targets by end of 2007

A directive requiring EU states to recover and recycle a greater proportion of packaging waste by 31 December 2008 was published in the bloc's official journal on 18 February, triggering immediate entry into force. Governments have until 18 August 2005 to transpose the rules, which were finalised last December (EED 05/12/03).

Updating the 1994 packaging directive, the new law requires at least 60% recovery of packaging waste and 55-80% recycling by the end of 2008. It sets new material-specific targets by the same time: 60% for glass, paper and board, 50% for metals, 22.5% for plastics and 15% for wood.
