New European detergents regulation published

Biodegradability and labelling rules polished up, row over phosphate content postponed for three years

Strengthened EU rules on detergent surfactant biodegradability and ingredient labelling will enter force on 8 October 2005. The new regulation was published in the bloc's official journal on 8 April after being finalised politically in March (EED 12/03/04).

The regulation sets new tests of ultimate surfactant biodegradability, addressing concerns that long-standing EU primary biodegrability requirements did not address potential metabolite toxicity. Biodegradability requirements are extended to all surfactants.
