EU Life programme extension to take effect

A regulation extending the EU's Life environmental project funding programme by two years will enter force on 8 October after being published in the bloc's official journal. The rules were agreed politically in the summer (EED 28/07/04). The programme's budget for the period to 31 December 2006 is €317m. The European Commission is required to report on how the programme has been implemented by 30 September 2005. Last week it tabled proposals for a new "streamlined" Life programme to take over from 2007 (EED 30/09/04). See regulation 1682/2004.
