EU prepares to get tough with new members

Commission will begin challenging EU-10 over green standards from the end of this year, says official

The EU's ten new member states will soon be challenged over apparently widespread failures to transpose European green rules into national law, a senior European Commission environment official said on Thursday.

Since they joined the EU in May the ten countries have been allowed a grace period, Georges Kremlis told an audience in London. But their transposition performance is "not satisfactory", and the Commission intends to start infringement proceedings by the end of December, he added.
